My first inkling that something was seriously wrong with George Bush was his inauguration speech and The State of the Union address when our president promised to spread the blessings of democracy throughout the world. That did not seem like a rationale position for a conservative to be taking, but I shugged this off as a momentary lapse. What really got my attention was the Terri Schiavo affair. To have Bill Frist practicing medicine on television, hearing Tom DeLay pontificate about judges and the President inturrupting his vacation to fly back from Crawford to sign unconstitutional legislation drove me out of the Republican party. As proof that I am not a "johnny come lately" to this view I am reproducing below an email that I sent to my party on April 6, 2005.

Tom Delay must go and the party must return to its roots. The Terri Shiavo vote has forced me to consider the worst of all possible worlds--becoming a democrat. Stop sending me fund raising materials and stop all fund raising telephone calls till Tom Delay is gone and you do something to balance the budget rather than intrude into my bedroom. Surely the grand old party has lost its way.
My only choice was to "cut and run".
