Cut and Run

This is a home for former Republicans who are "cutting and running" from the current policies and leadership of the Republican Party. The Democratic Party is not an alternative. The purpose of this site is to provide an exanchage of views as to how disenchanted Republicans can make thier voice heard in advance of the 2008 convention.

Location: San Francisco, California, United States

I am a 77 year old retired trial lawyer, and an active mediator/arbitrator who is also a baseball nut. In 2001 I attended the San Francisco Giants Fantasy Camp in Scottsdale. Since then, after eleven subsequent camps and a kidney transplant I am still attempting to play baseball with the young folks. My trials and tribulations in returning to the game, together with comments upon sports, the passing political scene and developments in the law, will, on an irregular basis, appear on this site A word of warning, I am a recovering Republican-a-holic who has been driven from my party by George W Bush and the Tea Party (which is making George Bush look good). You are invited to agree, disagree or just chime in with any comments.

How It All Began--Terri

My first inkling that something was seriously wrong with George Bush was his inauguration speech and The State of the Union address when our president promised to spread the blessings of democracy throughout the world. That did not seem like a rationale position for a conservative to be taking, but I shugged this off as a momentary lapse. What really got my attention was the Terri Schiavo affair. To have Bill Frist practicing medicine on television, hearing Tom DeLay pontificate about judges and the President inturrupting his vacation to fly back from Crawford to sign unconstitutional legislation drove me out of the Republican party. As proof that I am not a "johnny come lately" to this view I am reproducing below an email that I sent to my party on April 6, 2005.

Subject: Right to Life and Tom Delay

Tom Delay must go and the party must return to its roots. The Terri Shiavo vote has forced me to consider the worst of all possible worlds--becoming a democrat. Stop sending me fund raising materials and stop all fund raising telephone calls till Tom Delay is gone and you do something to balance the budget rather than intrude into my bedroom. Surely the grand old party has lost its way.

My only choice was to "cut and run".

Win or Lose in 2006

As we sit here 12 days before the midterm elections I am perplexed as to whether a Republican or Democratic victory would be a plus or a minus to the cause of the Cut and Run Republicans. As an economist would say "on the one hand" it would be a major plus for Republican chances in the 08 election if they did not control the House and the Senate for the next two years--the blame for the mess created by the Bush crowd, which will become more and more apparent in the next two years, could be spread around. Also, a Democratic majority in the House and/or Senate would provide a much needed check upon the excesses of the Bush administration particularly in the area of judicial nominations and our of control spending. Yes, I believe that the Democrats would do more to balance the budget, cut spending and adopt a rational foreign policy. So it is a no brainer--all cut and run Republicans should vote Democratic.

Not so fast--the Democrats look and sound really good until one realizes that they have no discernable program or philosophy of government. Add to that the specter of listening to Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, John Edwards and Howard Dean (not to mention the creep--Michael Moore) makes a cut and run Republican consider Canadian citizenship. We can't let any of these people near the levers of power--they are equally incompetent with those presently in power.

So what is a cut and run Republican to do? He/she can vote for Arnold--but cannot hope for a tie in the Senate--then Cheney would be the deciding vote. Any suggestions would be welcome.
